Where have you been, she wants to ask him, and when did you get back? Why are you here?
The unwavering scrunch around the edges of his gaze dissolves when she looks up at him from under her dewy lashes, after seeing the way her hands ball at her side.
A crumbled resolve. She was scared.
“Hey, kid,” he says, like a bullet, baritone and warm and shot straight through her chest. He has a country accent. His head tilts. “I know it’s been’a while. Missed you.”

Stiles visibly grimaces, shaking his head at the offer. “I don’t smoke. If I die, I’d rather not make it a slow and suffering one.”
Derek eyes Stiles with mirth tugging at the corners of his lips. He looks him up and down and Stiles feels suddenly warm under his gaze. Stiles takes off his jacket, the man standing beside Derek doesn’t miss a beat and takes it from him, holding it in his own arms as he sits back down in his own respective seat.
Derek leans back closer to Stiles, taking another puff and blowing it away. “I forgot. You’re the treasure of the Stilinski family.” Derek chuckles, taking in another puff, then a swig of his drink.
“What is it that they call you? Scabi, scarb sca-”
“Skarbie.”
Stiles interrupts, annoyed as he looks down at his watch on his wrist. He has forty minutes left and he absolutely wants to gouge his eyes out right now.
“Right.” Derek eyes Stiles, up and down, then downs his drink, slamming it on a table next to him. He doesn’t even ask, and another drink replaces the one he just finishes. Derek sees that Stiles’ hands are empty and waves at someone to get Stiles a drink.
