Colours and smells and sounds surrounded him on all sides, making him feel somewhat claustrophobic as he gasped for air that wasn’t filled with sickly sweet pollen. He reached for his breast pocket, wanting to take notes so he could have some sense of normalcy in this nightmare, but to his utter dismay, his book wasn’t there either. Monty cawed, the sound almost confused, as much as a bird can sound confused. However, despite the nonsensicality he felt in doing so, Edwin answered the question that hadn’t been asked.
“Monty, I have a feeling we’re not in Port Townsend anymore.”

“Maybe we should split up,” Monty suggested as they all turned back to face each other. “Right? I mean, that’s like, the only way we’ll be able to cover ground fast enough.”

Edwin's lips quirked in a bit of a smirk at Crystal's barb, her small comments somewhat endearing now. However, in this case, Monty was right. “The elemental poses little threat to humans. As such, we should pair ourselves up accordingly: one living and one dead per duo. Monty, with-”
“Charles,” the raven-haired boy cut in, attaching himself to Charles's forearm, right in the way of the torch Edwin was about to pass to his companion. “I'll go with Charles.”

Or, Monty chooses to betray Charles in the forest, feeling it the lesser of two evils. Without anyone there to warn him of the danger, Charles walks right into a trap that could end his afterlife forever. Meanwhile, Edwin helps Crystal with David, facing his fear of returning to Hell.

Summary
The apocalypse had come slowly, as if the earth itself were trying to delay it. It started in the plants, growing where they weren’t supposed to, whole redwoods poking their ways through skyscrapers, wild gardens taking over office buildings. People tried to remove them, but eventually, it just became easier to let them stay. Then, the creatures. The first incident was reported by a distraught son who'd gone deer hunting with his dad. He said that when his dad tried to shoot the deer, it just ate the older man, leaving bloody bones behind. The son lost his hand trying to get away from it. The animals turned, creatures of every kind becoming violent to the point where people were putting down their own dogs before they could be betrayed.
Cell towers were covered in vines and Wi-fi routers were grown through with roots and wandering branches, rendering phones almost completely useless. Governments had been mostly dismantled, leaders either dead or in hiding.
Niko's dead, Edwin needs to find somewhere safe before Crystal loses her mind, and Charles just hopes he stops finding corpses.

He could feel the leather hitting his arms, could hear the cruel words thrown at him. Plastic was burrowed in his abdomen, shards crimson and crusted with blood.
